Desktop Dean was developed using Microsoft's .NET environment. .NET is robust and secure programming and application runtime environment, very similar to Java. Unlike standard Windows applications, .NET-based apps generally do not have the variety of security holes you hear about all of the time: because of how .NET was designed it is much more inherently secure and stable.
A somewhat "painless" (in so far as re-writing all UI code makes that possible!) port of Desktop Dean to Mac OS X and Linux is possible because of a fabulous open source project named Mono. Mono provides a .NET runtime environment for Mac OS X and Linux. Mono is, however, still under development.
While it is our desire to port to Linix and Mac OS X, we can't make any promises at the moment nor provide an ETA: research is ongoing into the scope of the work. But if you would like to help test should we get to that point, please join one of the following mailing lists:
You can get functionality similar to Desktop Dean by using a general purpose news aggregator. There are some really great free programs out there. The Harvard RSS area has a good list.
Note that while Desktop Dean is free, it is "closed source." This means we do not make the source code available.
